i have big things on tap for the weekend!:
-find a place to live
-learn to buy french bread from the woman who walks down the street with the bread basket that looks deceptively like a laundry basket (hope i dont buy someone's drrrty undie
s! thats not a healthy thing to top with eggs for
breakfast.)
-go to the Russian market to look for a white slip that fits my big american hips. im already steeling myself against the we-certainly-dont-have-anything-that-will-fit-those,- whitey glances from the sales lady. and the snickers. they are not afraid of making weight comments here.
-try to find health insurance thats reasonable and actually pays for something i will use*
things already accomplished:
-i have given up on looking cute. so, thats one less thing....
-learning to ride on the back of a motorbike in pouring rain under a slicker with bag in lap and helmet on**
-met a whole bunch of english-speaking social workers tonight for a SW get together. that was nice.
-have plans for Fri and Sat night with new friends
-learned how to say 'Hello', 'thank you', 'thief', and 'how are you?' in Khmer

ReplyDeleteThanks for writing this blog...Being stuck in NC for the time being, it is so great to hear about your experiences! Vicarious travel: All of the fun, none of the bugs :)
hi! shit, i thought you just turned into an alien at first until i realized that was just a helmet!
ReplyDeletedon't worry about being considered fat over there - i was a whale back in shanghai and it was just extra impetus to lose 20 lbs! in retrospect, i probably would've tried to avoid panty shopping. i would have still visited the all girl, all nude japanese spa- never before and never since has the sight of my t&a attracted so many stares.
loving to read about your new home/work/etc. and glad you're meeting so many new people! -melissa
