i went to a conference in Siem Reap entitled:
the conference was opened with a welcome speech by the wife of Prime Minister Hun Sen, Mrs. Bun Rany Hun Sen, pictured here:
all in all it was very inspiring - people from all over the region sharing ideas about how to address violence against women and children. what a novel way to spend the holiday!
i went to the conference with 2 Khmer colleagues, and they made me take photos in front of all kinds of random stuff, like staircases and fountains.
here are some examples:
in addition, we got to eat a wonderful Khmer meal - fish, fish and beef - which i pronounced to be Thanksgiving dinner. i tried to explain turkey and stuffing, and this explanation was NOT helped by some silly slapstick movie shown on the bus on the way home in which a Grandmother was stuffing a turkey with everything from a small bush to a kitten to a large sausage. i had to explain that we dont, in fact, stuff cats into the turkey before baking.
in addition, at the conference buffet dinner, i was hardpressed to explain the concept of 'deviled eggs.' i got partway into it and realized that delving into a detailed description of heaven and hell was not helpful... i even went so far as to draw a picture of the devil before i realized that that had NOTHING to do with the eggs. i just kept saying 'yolks and mayonnaise and cayenne pepper', but that wasnt that helpful either.
*sigh*
