i have a sneaking feeling that perhaps the honeymoon is coming to an end. i dont have nearly as much to write about. Cambodia is beginning to feel more like home, as if i was living in Carrboro and writing a blog about living in Carrboro. except that no one would want to read that...
there are still so many interesting things happening, but i am feeling less compelled to write about them. all this to say that i might not write as much, but it doesnt mean that i dont love you. i DO love you, i just dont want to stare into your eyes as long as i used to, or to hold hands everytime we are in the car together. also, your breath stinks. and if you leave your socks on the living room floor one more time, im moving out.
pet peeve #24: there is a terrible thing happening in the world. i am afraid that this plague of rudeness might spread West -- if it hasnt already. strap on those hot-n-handy face masks and fight its transmission with all your might: the totally inappropriately-timed cell phone answering! i have three such appalling situations.
the first, a white, Western speaker presenting research during a UNICEF meeting stopped discussing his findings and flipping through powerpoint slides to take a call! he even stepped out into the hall during his lecture.
secondly, and more personally distressing, was when my masseuse just got up in the middle of the massage to take a call - even stepping into the hall to chat for 4-5 minutes. what?!
lastly, and perhaps most outrageous, a friend, her two bosses, and a translator were interviewing a potential candidate for a position with her organization. during the interview, her phone rang, and she said, 'oh, i have to take this. im sorry - its really important! my brother has been really sick and i have to see if everything is ok.' she took the call, and then was on the phone for a long time right at the table, alternately laughing, occasionally showing concern and just chatting away. after the interview was over, my friend asked the interpreter about it and he said, 'oh, no, Madame. im so sorry! her brother is not sick! she doesnt even have a brother! she was not being truthful with you!' she had sat there on the phone just chatting away and LIED to the interviewers about the situation, while another Khmer speaker sat listening in the room! crazy....
someone has apparently also manufactured a coffee maker with a plug that would be more appropriate for a clothes dryer. i bought a $20 coffee maker that has a 220 plug. again -- what?! i have spent the last 2 weeks trying to find an adapter. FOUND IT! went to Odessey Market with my friend Kristin today and we found an adapter that will allow me to plug my mega-super-power-sucking coffee maker into the regular wall outlet.
im serious when i say that i am sorry that my blog entries have gone from funny and interesting to - 'hey! i bought an outlet adapter today!' this is literally the most significant thing thats happening to me this weekend. i will stay outside tomorrow ALL DAY to try to make something interesting happen and then rush back in to write about it. wish me luck!
